It is likely that you will be able to put a fence in your yard; however, the Village Code has requirements for fence height and placement. For example, fences in the rear or side yard can be up to 6 feet in height, but in the front yard the maximum height is four feet (up to 6 feet could be allowed with Plan Commission approval). You also can’t put a fence on an easement without Plan Commission involvement, and fences cannot be closer than 2 feet from the public right of way. Because fences include these types of restrictions, there is a permit and inspection required for building a fence. In addition to the application, residents must include a copy of their property survey that identifies right of ways, easements, and property lines, as well as the proposed placement of the fence.
