The current COVID-19 Virus pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for individuals, businesses and governments. While some Village services and programs have been suspended during this time to comply with social distancing directives and to help slow the spread of this illness, many essential Village services need to continue. The Village Board and various other Village Committees and Commissions will continue to meet during this time to ensure that Village operations are not interrupted.

The Village has undertaken a review and analysis of the various legal, technical and factual factors involved in this truly unique situation to provide as broad of access as is reasonably possible in compliance with open meeting requirements while also ensuring appropriate social distancing requirements are met to protect the health of our residents, elected officials and staff. This review and analysis is a continual process and the conclusions reached are subject to change based upon a myriad of factors as the impacts from the pandemic continue to play out.

Accordingly, at this time members of the Village Board, committees or commissions will be able to participate in meetings remotely through the use of WebEx should they desire and per Resolution 27-2020 will be able to vote on items before their respective bodies while participating remotely. Any officials participating in meetings in person will be seated at least six feet apart to the extent possible.

At this time, physical access to meetings by citizens will not be prohibited. However, public seating will be limited to ensure proper social distancing requirements. Citizens are strongly encouraged to access public meetings by viewing the live broadcast. Village Board and Plan Commission meetings will continue to be broadcast on cable, and all meetings will be streamed on the internet through links on the Village website. Information on how to access meetings through these methods will be included on each agenda.

Citizens will also have several ways to submit comments for Village meetings. Comments can be submitted by email to before a meeting , by telephone to 262-250-4740 or by U.S. mail. All comments received will be entered into the record for the respective meeting. Citizens will also have the opportunity to verbally provide comments during the meeting by phone or internet through the WebEx system when that function is opened by the chair.

Again, we are strongly encouraging residents to take advantage of the several methods of remote participation that we are making available to them in order to safeguard their health and the health of the community. While the Village Board room will be open for meetings, seating will be limited due to social distancing. Once the capacity of the room is reached, no additional member of the public will be allowed to enter the room.

The directions given by the Federal and State governments are changing on a day to day basis. The Village may need to adjust public meeting practices in the future. The Village of Germantown Village Board declared a Public Health Emergency on March 16th. The Village is continuing to work to follow directions from the Federal government, State of Wisconsin and Washington County to reduce non-essential contact between people in an effort to slow the spread of Covid-19. As a result, Village Hall will be closed for in person business effective at 4:30pm March 17, 2020 for all non-election activities. Voter registration and absentee voting will continue during all previously scheduled hours. Village staff will continue to answer phone calls and emails. Payments can be made online for utility bills and recreation programming here: Payments can be made by check and mailed or dropped in outside drop box. If you are unable to make a payment electronically for utility bills, please call the Finance Department for assistance. With all the news about sold out bottled water, you might be worried that there is a problem with the water supply But that’s not the case- According to the CDC, the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water. Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as those in most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID- 19.

There is no shortage of information on the news and social media about the Coronavirus, and it is difficult to predict where the situation will go from here. We want you to know that the Village is working to protect its residents as much as possible.
What the Village is doing to protect residents:
• The Village will follow all guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), and the Washington Ozaukee Health Department about closures or specific protocols.
• We are closely monitoring developments and making decisions based on the most up-to-date information. At this time, there are no individuals who have tested positive for Covid-19 in Washington County.
• We have a Covid-19 team of key Village staff working together to implement any suggested protocols;
• We are working to keep public areas clean and safe; we are also doing the same for our employees.
• We will update residents of any changes on our website and on social media outlets.
Tips for helping slow the spread in Germantown and for those in a high risk category for Covid-19:
• If you need to go to Village Hall for a payment, registration or permit, consider your other options- check out our website to see what can be done online:
• Request an absentee ballot by mail. The easiest ways to do this are to email a request to that includes your address, date of election, and a copy of your photo ID (no selfies please!) or go to and follow the instructions. If you want to vote in person, absentee voting will begin at Village Hall on March 17th. Call the Clerk’s Department for more information at 250-4740. • If you or someone in your home is sick, please reschedule building inspections when possible.
• Watch public meetings online or on cable. If you would like to share your thoughts about an issue or project with the Village Board but don’t want to attend a public meeting, you can email your statement to Emailed statements are read aloud at the relevant meeting.
Tips for everyone:
• Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom, before and after eating, after coughing or sneezing, and after touching any high touch areas (doorknobs, light switches, etc.).
• When you can’t wash your hands in those situations, use hand sanitizer
• Avoid touching your face
• Cover your mouth and nose with your arm or tissue when coughing or sneezing
• Avoid close contact with people if you are sick.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your home or office. With all of the many closures being announced, it may seem like the world is shutting down, but we want to reassure you that this is not the case. The closures are being implemented to help slow the spread of coronavirus, so that our hospitals and public health agencies can keep up with demand and provide the best care possible.

The Governor declared a Public Health Emergency yesterday; the intent behind this declaration is to make it easier for communities to access the resources they need and make the decisions best for their communities, with a minimum of red tape.

Previous Department Updates and Changes

Public Works:  Orchard Ridge Landfill , W124 N9355 Boundary Road, Menomonee Falls, will close their residential public access to the landfill through April 1st. In the meantime, residents should utilize their curbside Trash Cart or wait until further notice. The Germantown Recycling Center is also closed until further notice.

Police Department: Dispatch will be asking more health related questions on calls, even when it is unrelated. The Police Annex is closed for outside training, and the lobby remains open but individuals are highly encouraged to call in and not come in person.  Full letter can be found here.

Library: Updated March 20, 2020
 All library programming and activities within the building have been cancelled until April 12th or further notice. Curbside pickup will be offered on Friday March 20 and Saturday March 21st. In order to reduce exposure to staff and community members, we will not be able to provide curbside service beginning March 23rd. Park & Recreation: Recreation programming has been cancelled, along with Kids Klub Before and After School programming, until April 12 or further notice.  The Senior Center is closed as well; the meal program is now entirely through the Washington County Home Delivered Meal Program. Their phone numbers are 262-335-4497 or 877-306-3030.  Meals will not be served at the Senior Center until further notice. All park shelter and senior center rentals through April 12th have been cancelled. Decisions about reservations and programming after that time will be announced as soon as they are made.
