Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald Ash Borer

On June 16, 2015 Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was confirmed in the Village of Germantown. EAB is a tree-killing insect that feeds on all ash trees. This highly destructive pest is regulated by state and federal agencies to minimize its spread. The Village as well as the entire county is and will remain under quarantine restricting movement of ash and other woody material.

While this is the first known case of EAB in the Village it is likely that other ash trees are infested, even if they are not showing symptoms. The Village would like to encourage residents to inspect the Ash trees on your property, or have them inspected and removed if infested. If the infested trees remain standing, they will become brittle and more dangerous, as they snap and fall. This is not only a safety concern, but also makes removal more time consuming and costly. The Village will not inspect or remove any ash trees that are on private property.

Based on a tree inventory conducted in 2007 the Village has over 4,000 street and park trees. Of those roughly 800 are ash. The Village will begin to remove street and park ash that are identified as weak and declining. The Village will also identify specific ash trees that we will treat with trunk injections. To assist Village staff in making these decisions the Village has contracted with Wachtel Tree Science.

If you have any concerns with ash trees on Village lands or road right of way adjacent to your property please call the Village of Germantown Department of Public Works at 262 250 4720. The links below offer numerous amounts of information for the public on identifying ash trees and symptoms of EAB. The links also provide information on treatment options and lists of contractors for inspection/consultation, treatment, and removal.
